Ward, Barbara
   b. 1914, York; d. 1981
   Economist
Barbara Ward (later Baroness Jackson of Lodsworth) was an economist who influenced thinking on aid to underdeveloped countries, the global environment and the plight of the world’s poor. Only One Earth: The Care and Maintenance of a Small Planet (1972) (co-authored with René Dubos) and Progress for a Small Planet (1979) are her bestknown works. Her first book, The West at Bay, was published in 1948. In Progress for a Small Planet, she identified three principal threats to the global environment: pollution, affluent nations’ consumption of limited resources, and consequent growing tensions between rich and poor. She offered practical strategies for recycling waste, more efficient use of energy and meeting the basic needs of the disadvantaged.
